Original Book Review

What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown
4 Stars

This one completely surprised me in the best way. Set against the backdrop of late-90s Montana and San Francisco, this atmospheric slow-burn mystery pulled me in with its haunting premise and held tight with its thoughtful exploration of identity, isolation, and technology.

Jane has spent her whole life off the grid, raised by a father who believes the outside world is toxic and corrupt. But as she grows older and starts to question everything she’s ever been told, the secrets of her past begin to unravel and what she uncovers is far darker than she ever imagined.

The setting was nostalgic and eerie, the themes timely and layered, and Jane herself was such a compelling narrator. Her journey from blind trust to brave self-discovery felt raw, real, and unforgettable. This is one of those rare books that I know will stick with me for a long time.

Had such a fun time buddy reading this with @booktalk.bykelsie We both agreed this wasn’t our usual pick, but we couldn’t stop talking about it. The 90s vibes, the cult-like isolation, the philosophical undertones, and the early internet commentary made it such a unique and thought-provoking read.

If you’re into character-driven mysteries with depth, tension, and a touch of nostalgia, you need to add this one to your list.
