Original Book Review
— slewfoot by brom —
slewfoot presents a dark and atmospheric take on folklore and historical fiction, but ultimately fell short of my expectations. they say to never judge a book by its cover, but i was anticipating a more eerie and gripping experience from a book with such a beautifully illustrated jacket.
the characters lacked the depth and complexity i needed to fully engage in the story, and many of them felt like mere archetypes rather than fully fleshed-out individuals with nuanced motivations and emotions.
while the novel excels in creating a haunting atmosphere and vivid historical backdrop, the overarching theme felt diluted and unclear. the central conflicts seemed to circle around the same themes without much progression or evolution and the narrative meandered through various plot points without a strong thematic anchor.
overall, the writing was surprisingly bland and the story leaves little to be desired. the lack of narrative progression left me wanting more and although the book features stunning illustrations, if i were seeking for visual appeal, i would’ve grabbed a graphic novel instead.
