Original Book Review

Hi! I’m Elise! I’m currently studying for a Publishing MA and so I thought it’d be a good idea to create a digital platform where I can share my thoughts on current reads and provide you with some of my own recommendations.

I most recently read On The Savage Side, by Tiffany Mcdaniel, after reading another of her novels, Betty, last summer, which quickly became a 5 star favourite of mine.

Her stories are all set in Ohio, where she is from, and follow pressing, yet fundamental topics throughout their narratives. McDaniel’s lyrical narrative style can take some getting used to, however I found it to be uniquely beautiful once I had.

On The Savage Side follows the lives of twin sisters, Arc and Daffy, and their survival from a young age with an addict mother. It deals with topics such as addiction, poverty, neglect, murder and sexual abuse, with the women in the story being victims to all. It is an empowering story which provides a reminder that women’s lives should not be overlooked because of their gender.

On The Savage Side, Tiffany McDaniel: 4/5 Stars
