The Names by Florence Knapp
(TW: domestic violence)
Description:
What if the name you give a child determines the life they’ll lead? In The Names, Cora is asked by her husband Gordon—a well-respected doctor—to register their newborn’s name. Gordon wants to follow family tradition and name the baby Gordon. Cora, however, prefers Julian, and their daughter Maia has her own idea: Bear. The story then explores the lives each of these names could create.
My Thoughts:
I was immediately drawn to the concept—how a name can define a destiny was such a powerful and unique premise. While the heart of the story is creative and thought-provoking, it’s deeply rooted in themes of domestic violence, which made it a heavy and emotional read. That said, it also made the book incredibly compelling. The narrative does a great job showing how one decision can impact not just a life, but the lives of everyone around it. I will say the ending didn’t quite land for me, but overall, this was a memorable read.

Favorite Quote:
“There’s something about that—when the quietest person, most reserved in their opinions, most reluctant to impose their thoughts on others, finally speaks; you hear. Oh. Oh, and you’re suddenly face to face with the truth.”
