Original Book Review

The Little Liar is a World War II–era novel set in Greece, following a young Jewish boy, Nico. His reputation for honesty is manipulated by a Nazi officer to convince his community to board trains to concentration camps. After realising the truth, Nico is consumed by guilt, and eventually becomes a pathological liar, with the story following his journey over the decades alongside those affected by his actions including his brother and the officer who deceived him. The story explores themes of truth, betrayal, guilt, and redemption. I had never read anything by Mitch Albom before, and I found his writing very readable and neat. That said, I had mixed feelings about the book. While the story was compelling and I devoured it quickly, the characters and plot felt quite unrealistic at times. I understand it’s fiction, but in historical fiction I prefer more plausible narratives and believable character development. Still, I found it fascinating to learn about the Jewish community in Greece during WWII, which I hadn’t known much about before.
