Funny Story by Emily Henry

I’ve realised that I forgot to post my final thoughts about this book in all the craziness recently!

I now completely understand the hype around Emily Henry’s books – if the others are half as good as this one then I want to read them allllll

The premise of this book is great and I became so emotionally invested within the first few pages. I find the fake-dating trope really entertaining and the idea of using it to get back at your smug exes was so good! Honestly Peter and Petra were so realistically unbearable, it was hard to read sometime.

I loved the relationship between Daphne and Miles – their humour and communication styles made me laugh out loud a lot, which doesn’t often happen! But I was also surprised at how well the author balanced the humour with some genuinely emotional moments.

There were some really interesting discussions about how people learn to change themselves to be more accepted by a partner, but you can lose yourself in the process. Also looking at how parental relationships can impact you throughout your life. It was heartbreaking to read sometimes because the characters’ experiences felt very real.

The book also gets big bonus points from me for not pulling the ‘romantic love solved all our problems’ card, which is a pet peeve of mine. Instead the book did a great job of showing how the characters realise that they need all sorts of different relationship dynamics to lead a full, authentic and meaningful life.

Overall, I loved this story and highly recommend to anyone who’s curious about this book or author! I also have Beach Read and Happy Place, so let me know which one to read next!
