Original Book Review
Finished reading 1984 by George Orwell.
This book was part of my resolution to read more classics this year, and while I was prepared for it to be “important” and “thought-provoking,” I wasn’t prepared for how scary it would feel. Not horror scary . . but deeply unsettling.
It’s hard to believe this was written in 1949. Orwell imagined a world of constant surveillance, erased history, controlled speech, manipulated truth and somehow, so much of it echoes the reality we live in today.
I appreciated the simplicity of the writing. It’s not flowery, not dense. It’s direct, raw, and so easy to slip into, which makes the slow unraveling of the story even more intense. You don’t realize how deep you’re in until you’re gasping for air.
It felt dark. Claustrophobic. Uncomfortable.
Highly recommend it if you haven’t read it yet. But brace yourself: it stays with you.
