Original Book Review
Contains spoilers
Warning: Contains graphic descriptions of violence, including children. I felt it was necessary to bring attention to this brutal mass slaying in US history.
Summary
This is a historical “thriller” that follows three women as they navigate the events leading up to and surrounding the Mountain Meadows Massacre — a brutal massacre in Utah of families traveling from Arkansas to California in 1857.
Quotes that ripped me apart
“We’re safe. We’re together. We’re almost there.”
“The sound of the screams. All those women and children. I couldn’t do it, but I did do it. I did do it… I helped turn that Meadow red.”
“Clubs and knives. Women and children. Do your duty. None left to tell.”
“Dead men. Dead women. Dead children. All unarmed. And seventeen toddlers and babies, tucked into the homes of the saints who’d killed their parents. One tucked into my home.”
Review
This book was absolutely heartbreaking. I gave it 3 stars because I had a hard time following the plot and characters for most of the book. It started to pick up and click for me around 73% in.
Overall, I’m very glad I learned about this tragic event and will probably re-read and explore more about it in the future.
Has anyone else read this book or already know about this tragic event?
